Luma

Luma is an Android video player for local and network media. It combines efficient hardware-first playback with FFmpeg fallback, capability-checked libplacebo GPU rendering, precise audio and subtitle controls, and practical tools for organizing a personal media library.

Key features

  • Playback that adapts: Auto mode chooses a qualified hardware, HW+ or software route for each source.
  • GPU video processing: Compatible routes use libplacebo through Vulkan or GLES, with CPU fallback when GPU rendering is unavailable.
  • Precise audio: Shape sound with graphic and parametric EQ, ReplayGain, compression, limiting, balance and channel controls.
  • Flexible subtitles: Preserve styled ASS subtitles with libass, add external or secondary subtitles, and adjust timing and appearance.
  • One media library: Browse local storage and saved network locations, then organize media with search, filters, folders, playlists, favourites and history.
  • Everyday playback tools: Use gestures, picture-in-picture, background audio, bookmarks, chapters, A–B repeat, speed control and a private folder.

Decoder modes

  • Auto: Recommended for most playback. Luma evaluates the source and device, preferring the platform path for HDR, qualified HW+ for compatible SDR, and software decoding when hardware is unavailable or has failed.
  • HW: Uses MediaCodec hardware decoding and Android’s standard video output for efficient, lower-power playback. FFmpeg remains available as a final fallback.
  • HW+: Combines hardware decoding with Luma’s owned libplacebo renderer for compatible SDR sources.
  • SW: Uses the bundled FFmpeg software video decoder, rendering through libplacebo on Vulkan when available, then GLES or CPU fallback when necessary.

Advanced video controls

  • Quality presets: Choose Auto, Smoothness first, Accurate color, Battery saver or Maximum quality.
  • Picture and scaling: Adjust brightness, contrast, saturation, hue and gamma. Compatible GPU routes add bilinear, bicubic, Lanczos and anime-focused scaling.
  • Image processing: Control sharpening, detail restoration, chroma upsampling, debanding, dithering and YADIF or BWDIF deinterlacing when supported.
  • Color management: The supported software GPU path can use an ICC target profile or a user-supplied .cube 3D LUT.

Media, audio and subtitles

  • Qualified video baselines: H.264/AAC in MP4 and MKV, plus VP9/Opus in WebM. Actual playback also depends on the device and source.
  • Qualified audio formats: MP3, AAC and HE-AAC, FLAC, WAV PCM, Vorbis, Opus, AMR, MP1 and MP2. Arm64 builds add fallback coverage for ALAC and raw AC-3, E-AC-3 and DTS Core.
  • Audio processing: Use 5-, 10- or 31-band graphic EQ, six-filter parametric EQ, manual gain, ReplayGain, Night or custom compression, true-peak limiting, skip silence and independent speed and pitch.
  • Subtitle control: Load external and secondary subtitles, correct sync, choose text encoding, customize typography and placement, or search online when a provider is configured.

Library and playback tools

  • Local and network sources: Browse device storage and saved HTTP(S), RTSP, SMB, FTP, SFTP and WebDAV locations.
  • Organization: Search, sort and filter media; build playlists and smart playlists; and keep favourites, history, a queue, resume positions and recoverable items.
  • Playback control: Use 0.25×–4× speed, pitch, gestures, chapters, bookmarks, go-to-time, screenshots, approximate frame stepping, zoom, pan and aspect-ratio options.
  • Privacy and diagnostics: Protect the app or a private folder with a PIN and supported biometric unlock. Detailed playback diagnostics are designed to omit media names, paths, URLs and search text.

Luma is available for Android and Auto with WearOS support coming soon through Google Play.

Feature availability depends on the device, Android version, media source and network. Advanced GPU and HDR routes appear only when runtime capability checks pass.

Frequently Asked Questions

Luma is an Android video player for local files and network media. It combines hardware-first playback, FFmpeg fallback decoding, advanced video rendering, subtitle controls and audio processing.

Auto is recommended for most videos. HW prioritizes efficient hardware decoding, HW+ adds Luma’s compatible libplacebo rendering path, and SW uses the bundled FFmpeg software decoder.

Qualified playback includes H.264/AAC in MP4 and MKV, plus VP9/Opus in WebM. Additional compatibility depends on the file, codec and decoding capabilities of your device.

Yes. Luma can open media from saved HTTP(S), RTSP, SMB, FTP, SFTP and WebDAV locations. Network playback requires a stable connection and access to the selected server.

Yes. You can load external or secondary subtitles, correct subtitle timing, choose text encoding, and adjust typography and placement. Styled ASS subtitles are rendered using libass.

Try Auto mode first, then switch to SW if hardware decoding fails. Also confirm that Luma can access the file, check the network connection for remote media, and review the playback diagnostics for codec or renderer information.

Yes. Luma includes graphic and parametric equalizers, ReplayGain, manual gain, compression, true-peak limiting, balance, channel controls, audio delay, skip silence and independent speed and pitch adjustment.

Yes. Supported playback can continue using background audio or picture-in-picture while you use another app.

Luma includes a private folder and app-lock options using a PIN and supported biometric authentication. Availability may depend on your device.

Local media playback works offline. An internet or local-network connection is required for remote media, online subtitle searches and other network-based features.
